Happy Thanksgiving!

Thanksgiving Dinner

It’s Thanksgiving Day today and a Happy Thanksgiving to all who are celebrating. We had our dinner a little earlier, on Saturday. We wanted to share a traditional Thanksgiving dinner with our visitors from England before they left for home.

One of the gastronomic highlights for us (although you wouldn’t want to eat it every day!) is always the stuffing. I make a traditional bread stuffing based on my Mum’s recipe. It’s simple and yet oh so tasty!

Traditional Bread Stuffing for Turkey

Ingredients:

3/4 loaf of white bread (preferably not too soft), torn into pieces
1/2 lb. bacon chopped into small bits
1/3 cup chopped onion
1 stalk of celery, chopped
3/4 tsp. poultry seasoning (or thyme and/or sage)
3/4 tsp. salt
1/8 tsp. pepper
Sherry (preferably sweet)

Method:

Place bread pieces into a pot and add poultry seasoning, salt and pepper, tossing well.
Begin heating seasoned bread pieces over low heat.
Fry bacon bits and add to bread.
Leave bacon fat in pan and fry onion and celery until soft. Add to bread.
Liberally splash sherry into bread mixture to soften while continuing to heat.
Stuff into both cavities of the turkey and bake.
Enjoy!

  1. Happy Thanksgiving!

That’s similar to our family’s, except substitute melted butter for sherry and homemade venison sausage for bacon. Dry bread the day before. Yum either way!
