Happy New Year!

Hope everyone had happy holidays! I am optimistically looking forward to a new year that is far better than the old one. My only resolution is to try to stop putting myself last. After all, you have to put on your own oxygen mask first before you can help anyone else.

For the first day of the new year, we took it easy for most of the day and then my (long-suffering) husband (as I call him) roasted a wonderful prime rib of beef with Yorkshire pudding and a nice Syrah (or Shiraz). Delicious. Today he baked shortbread cookies! (I think I’ll keep him. Lol.)

With the more stringent public health measures in place over the holidays, the traditional walk-through holiday light displays had to be cancelled. However, the Pacific National Exhibition (PNE) has been really amazingly resourceful in pivoting their business to stay afloat and keep people employed during the pandemic. They came up with a 2-km-long drive-through show of lights and performers, charging $39 per carload. They’ve been doing it for a month or so and have been sold out, so when they put on the new dates in January, we quickly booked our spot for 8 p.m. on the 1st. Here are some pictures from the drive.

It was a great way to kick off 2021! And of course, we bought a bag of those fairground mini-donuts to eat on the drive home!

Here’s to more happy adventures in the new year!

  1. I think that’s a spectacular resolution and I’m x’ing fingers that you will be able to achieve it. Happy New Year!

$40 CDN for a carload is very affordable for 2 km! Really neat. We went to one of those but it was more like 3/4 mi. I really appreciated that they did it, though. I think it was $20.

  2. Happy New Year to you and your keeper of a hubby! 🙂 What a sweetheart to treat you so well. WOW – those lights are amazing. Our little hometown park has a drive-through light display, not that grand, but still. This year the donations from the public were the highest they’ve seen in years past. I’m with you in taking care of myself first this year too. Last year seems like so much was put on the backburner, including taking care of ourselves. I’m guardedly optimistic like you – we’ll see how 2021 really ends up being. 😉
